"I also think that in the era of a rapidly proliferating spectrum of musical options, the culture of music listening for a lot of people feeds directly into that most primal of capitalist desires: for the combination of incessant newness and minor difference. Which is why a lot of online savvy younger music geeks nowadays (I’m speculating, based on anecdotal research thus far) have less 'fave bands' and more 'rad playlists.' If the logic holds, then, it means that fans are more and more wanting a frequent turnover of artists who sound alike."

Please read Matthew and Eric’s combined treatise on why Spoon is underappreciated, and the paradox of being a consistently excellent indie-rock band in the current attention-addled musical moment.

Maura beat me to clipping this part of an excellent discussion.  My two cents is just to support the conclusion in the above quote.  My students have this year (for whatever reason) started talking music with me after class and I specifically asked a couple of them the other day how they come across music.  I learned that they (not to generalize a couple of teenagers’ iPods as a generational trend, but I think it’s more common than not) generally collect songs rather than albums.  If they like songs by a band, they will go get more songs by the same band with little thought to album/era/etc. It’s very strange for me to talk about a band like Modest Mouse without thinking of them by album, where they only knew a handful of songs scattered throughout the last fifteen years.  Even though we were talking about the same band, it was like we were talking about two different things.

Anyway, co-sign about Spoon’s continued brilliance (and Eric’s Ted Leo quote too) and that they might be damned (well, not quite damned, but certainly not lauded nearly as much) by the continually high bar they vault over each time.

I’m loving the love for Spoon on tumblr/twitter tonight. I don’t think I can add too much more to the discussion other than to say ditto to everything that’s been said. It’s so easy get caught up in the best-most-new-band scooping that goes on in the music journalism/blogism that it’s nice every once in a while to step back and appreciate the bands that consistently put A+ records.
